Passenger car registrations across the European Union in 2021

According to ACEA data sales of new cars in the EU fell by 2.4% to 9.7 million units in 2021 breaking the previous low record of 2020.

This happened as a result of the semiconductor chip shortage that negatively impacted car production throughout the year, but especially during the second half of 2021. As a matter of fact, last year total EU car registrations were still 3.3 million units below pre-crisis sales in 2019.

According to the forecast 2nd half of 2022 the chip shortage issue should be resolved, alongside with the Covid-19 restrictions and hopefully car production will not only go back to it’s usual figures, but hit the new heights. In the meantime, one of the best solutions is to buy relatively new 3-4 year old vehicles with accurate maintenance reports, mainly owned by banks and financial institutions driven on nice EU roads.
