Mazda is one of the best known brands in the automotive industry. Each vehicle combines striking designs with outstanding performance, top-class fuel efficiency and cutting-edge safety. All this at an affordable price, and they’re also fun to drive.
As time goes on and technology advances, the brand continues to be one of the most advanced and efficient auto-makers in the industry. It has also entered various agreements with other carmakers, e.g. to manufacture a roadster for Fiat-Chrysler (in Japan) and a supermini for Toyota (in Mexico).
We prepared a cheat sheet for you to “Zoom-Zoom” through while searching for Mazda models to add to your car inventory.
Mazda origin and history
The company was founded in 1920 under the name Toyo Cork Kogyo Ltd., focusing on the production of compressed cork boards. In 1927, it changed its name to Toyo Kogyo Co., Ltd., eliminating the association with cork products. The company then began to produce machine tools and rock tools.
The first time the word “Mazda” was used in reference to a vehicle was in 1931 when they produced the prototype Mazda-Go. It was an “autorickshaw,” a three-wheeled motorbike. As a result, motorized carts gained popularity.
The autorickshaw had 3 wheels and looked like a motorcycle with a cargo carrier
In 1960, the first passenger automobile was produced - it was the Mazda R360, a compact, two-door coupe that became immensely popular in Japan due to its affordability and fuel efficiency.
Mazda's first production car was a smash hit from the day it was launched
Where are Mazda cars made?
Mazda models come from a variety of locations. The headquarters are in Hiroshima, Japan, a city known for its resilience and recovery after World War II. Hiroshima Plant is Mazda’s main production facility, where many of its vehicles, including the popular Mazda CX-5, are manufactured.
However, Mazda has many global manufacturing sites, making it easier to sell in different markets efficiently while maintaining high standards of quality and craftsmanship. Other plants are located in Thailand (Mazda2), Mexico (Mazda3), China (Mazda CX-5) and the US (Mazda CX-50).
Where are Mazda cars most popular?
Mazda cars enjoy popularity in diverse markets globally, thanks to their combination of quality, innovation, and driving pleasure. Japan and North America remain the strongest markets, but Europe has also received the brand well.

Mazda Motor Europe (MME) is the regional headquarters of Mazda for the European market, established in 1989 in Germany. Success followed quickly with the establishment of Mazda Motor Parts Centre in Belgium in 1968 and the creation of Mazda Motors Deutschland in 1972.
This led to the development of the Mazda 323 – the first Mazda designed specifically for the European market.

Here are 5 fun facts about Mazda that you can share with your customers for a successful sales pitch and to prove that you’re an expert dealer.
Mazda Fun Fact #1 - It’s all in the name (and logo)
The name "Mazda" is derived from Ahura Mazda, the god of harmony, intelligence, and wisdom from the earliest civilization in West Asia. It also coincides with the pronunciation of the company's founder name, Jujiro Matsuda.
Have you ever noticed that if you look at Mazda’s corporate mark, every letter except “D” is in lower case?
There is a story behind every name, and Mazda is no exception
Through design, Mazda wanted to showcase its precision and reliability as a car company by aligning top and bottom lines of its corporate mark. Lower case “D” stood out of the upper line, so the decision was made to use upper case to make the corporate mark fit a rectangle.
Mazda Fun Fact #2 - Rotary engine technology
Since more affordable cars were being demanded, Mazda started compiling designs for compact cars, trucks, and three-wheeled vehicles that ended up leading to the creation of the famous Mazda rotary engine.
Also known as the Wankel engine, it is a distinctive and innovative type of internal combustion engine. Its compact and lightweight design allows for fewer moving parts, which can result in a smoother engine.
This winning combination led to significant sales success for Mazda in the 1970s, and they decided to bring the engine back - to generate power rather than as a drive unit. The MX-30 R-EV model uses the electricity produced in such a way to power an electric motor, and is generally referred to as a “series hybrid” or “extended range electric vehicle.”
Mazda Fun Fact #3 - Safest one on the road
Once Mazda nearly perfected their engine technology, the focus shifted to advanced safety technology such as a 360-degree monitor. Its purpose is to assist in backing up and parking, as well as giving a clearer view of your surroundings.

Other interesting safety features include design focused on providing maximum visibility, hazard alerts, blind spot monitoring, multiple airbags, and built-in impact-energy-absorbing features. All this makes Mazda cars a great choice to buy - and of course, for you to sell.
Mazda Fun Fact #4 - Skyactiv® technology
New Mazda models sport innovative Skyactiv® technology. But what exactly is it? The philosophy behind it is that fuel-efficiency shouldn’t take anything away from performance.
This means less of the legendary rotary engine that gave Mazda its initial fame, but more innovative models that other manufacturers find hard to compete with. Mazda’s petrol engines feature reduced emissions, while diesel engines deliver strong torque.
Mazda Fun Fact #5 - The Guinness World Record holder
The MX-5 Miata holds the Guinness World Record for the best-selling two-seater sports car in history. Since its introduction in 1989, it has gained a massive following due to its fun-to-drive nature and affordability.
The record was certified when production reached 531,890 units in May 2000. Guinness updated the record when production passed 700,000 and, later, 800,000 units.
Currently, Mazda is reapplying to Guinness World Records to have the record updated to 900,000 units.
